The Whitewing dove male finds a fairly open perch in the early morning during mating season and calls out "coo-uh-cuck-oo". During the breeding and nesting seasons some South Texas towns sound like a giant coop of calling dove. The Mexicans have a popular ballad "La Paloma" that uses the same repeated call.
Until the early 1920's, many millions of whitewings nested in the thick brush country along the lower Rio Grande. By 1950, almost all of the heavy brush country from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Laredo had been cleared for farms and cattle pastures. The whitewing almost disappeared from South Texas.

About the Artist - Charles Beckendorf
Charles grew up in Mathis, Texas, where he had the opportunity to spend hours on large ranches. Generous land owners gave him permission to wander freely over their ranches and he observed creatures in their natural surroundings. He developed a lifelong love of nature, whether it be in the tiniest of flowers or the largest of animals. It was at this time that he became a true naturalist.
